Elina Svitolina stuns four top-10 players to win Rogers Cup title

The leading member of the Top Five team Elina Svitolina clinched her 5th WTA title in 2017. The Ukrainian No.1 prevailed in a straight-sets final against Dane Caroline Wozniacki: 6-4, 6-0.

En route to the title in Canada Elina defeated the rising star of the Top Five team Daria Kasatkina in her opening match and then beat four top-10 players in a row (R16: Venus Williams, No. 9; QF: Garbine Muguruza, No. 4; SF: Simona Halep, No. 2; F: Caroline Wozniacki, No. 6). On Saturday Elina got two wins in one day, taking revenges against Muguruza, who has beaten her in their last meeting on hard courts this year, and Halep, who has survived in a dramatic quarterfinal with Elina at 2017 Roland Garros.

With this win Elina will rise to the No. 4 on the WTA rankings & the top-spot in the WTA Race to Singapore. Svitolina also becomes the first player on WTA tour to win three Premier 5-level titles in one season (since the current system introduced in 2009).

“I need some time still to really realize, because I had so many matches for the last two days and it’s been really, really tough physically,” the Ukrainian said after the match. “Today was very hot, so I’ve been really struggling. I’m just very happy that it’s finished – and with a title, it’s even more special.”
